Madison County is famous for covered bridges and cowboy actor John Wayne, but those icons, iconic as they are, seem kind of “yesterday” compared to newer, hipper attractions. Check out some of those newer, hip attractions this Sunday (September 29) during the Madison County Fall Crawl. The forecast is for sunny skies with a high of 79 degrees. The Crawl is free and family friendly.
Pick up a passport at any of fifteen locations. Have your passport stamped at each location you visit, and you’ll be eligible for neat giveaways from those spots.
A good place to start is Pammel Park Coffee Co., 1968 Pammel Park Rd., Winterset, 50273. Roasters of top quality beans sourced from all over the world, Pammel Park Coffee is one of the early-open locations, with cups of hot joe ready at 8 a.m.
Fifty-five vendors, spread out among the various stops, will be offering their wares, which include handmade items, food, flowers, and more. Most stops will have live music.
Cedar Shake Farm, not far from Pammel Park Coffee, is a flower and vegetable grower and the event’s organizer. Cedar Shake is offering ratatouille samples. The Corndog Caravan food truck will be parked on site.
At Kaysen Family Farms you can hold a baby pig.
Lone Oaks Farm and Speckled Hen Farms are within walking distance of each other (but a sixteen mile drive from Pammel Park Coffee). The motto at Speckled Hen is “Peace, Love, Chickens.”

The pigs at Kaysen Family Farms were a little too big to hold, but we did hold a seven-day-old lamb and pet a young heifer. I did the crawl with my youngest daughter Rebecca, who drove over from Chicago and brought her friend Penny, who had never been to Iowa before. We had a fantastic day!
Oh my goodness, holding a baby pig would be worth the trip for me! I have a thing about pigs, and have always wanted to be around a baby pig. I don't live in an area that facilitates much of that. Looks like a fun day! 💙
